Dear Mr. Brown,

During a visit to California I had the chance to visit the tomb of the great master Paramhansa Yogananda, in Los Angeles, in the cemetery of Forest Lawn, open to a public coming from different places and belonging to different faiths.

I was particularly impressed from the fact that the tomb was kept together with that of other dead persons, maybe less famous, but all equal in front of the death.

This fact aroused in me a feeling of deep admiration towards the American people and for the democratic spirit they show in reserving the same recognition to “the great men” as well as to common people. Furthermore, I have been positively impressed by the fact that the access to the cemetery and the tomb was free and without any kind of restriction.

Recently, though, I heard that Self-Realization Fellowship wants to build a mausoleum in order to bring the body of Yogananda under its jurisdiction. This raised in me many perplexities regarding the possibility for the future of being able to freely visit the tomb and pray on the mortal remains of the great master, like I was able to do during my last visit.

I hope therefore, that the tomb of Yogananda will stay in its place or that His body will be kept, in any case, in a place managed by the public administration, like it has been done until now in an excellent way.

I say this also considering the growing interest in the teachings of Yogananda constantly shown by people of every country and religion.

Gentilissimo sig. Nicolas Brown,

Durante una visita in California ho avuto occasione di visitare la tomba del grande maestro Paramhansa Yogananda a Los angeles, nel cimitero di Forest Lawn.

Ciò che mi ha particolarmente colpito è stato il fatto che la tomba si trovava insieme a quella degli altri defunti, forse meno noti, ma tutti uguali almeno di fronte alla morte.

Questo ha destato in me una profonda ammirazione per il popolo americano e per il modo democratico con cui sia ai “grandi” che alla “gente comune” viene riservato la stessa importanza.             Sono inoltre stato bene impressionato dal fatto che vi fosse libero accesso al cimitero e alla tomba senza particolari restrizioni.

Ho saputo però recentemente che la Self -Realization-Followship vuole realizzare un mausoleo per trasportare sotto la propria giurisdizione la salma di Paramhansa Yogananda, e questo ha sollevato in me molte perplessità sulla possibilità per il futuro di poter liberamente visitare la tomba e pregare sulle spoglie del grande maestro, come ho potuto fare durante la mia ultima visita.

Mi auguro quindi che la tomba di Yogananda rimanga al suo posto o che il Suo corpo venga custodito in ogni caso in un luogo gestito dalla pubblica autorità come è stato fatto finora in modo esemplare.

Questo anche alla luce di un sempre maggiore interesse che gli insegnamenti del Maestro continuano ad esercitare sulla gente di ogni paese e religione.
