Letters to the Zoning Administrator Concerning SRF's Request to Create a Private Mausoleum on Mt. Washington Note: Opinions expressed in letters are those of individuals, and not of any organization Dear Mr Brown, I’m a devotee of Paramhansa Yogananda and in the next years I hope to be able to visit the place where his body is kept. I know that his tomb is now in the cemetery of Forest Lawn, in Glendale, but that Self-Realization Fellowship has the intent to build a mausoleum on Mt. Washington and move Paramhansa Yogananda’s body to the site. This project seems to me a risky one in as much as it doesn’t take into consideration how important it is that a shrine in honor of Yogananda is being built in a place easily accessible to the thousands of devotees that come to visit him. As a future visitor of this shrine, I would rather support the more reasonable proposal, made from a group of devoteees of Yogananda not belonging to SRF, to build a shrine in a place where it will not be necessary to limit the accesss due to traffic problems or in order not to create discomfort to the neighborhood. I hear that the road up to Mt. Washington is quite narrow. Which visitor would want to find himself, in a like to happen future, caught in a crowd of people, waiting for a small van able to fit maybe only 10 people at a time? or, in an even worst scenario, who would want to take the risk of arriving at the shrine of his master and not being able to enter because it was necessary to book the visit in advance, due to organizational problems? Visiting a sanctuary should be a joy, not a Calvary! The last thing that I would like to bring to your attention is the risk, for a devotee of Yogananda not belonging to SRF, to see the door of the shrine shut in his face for the only reason that he learned to love Yogananda through a channel different from SRF. In a near future to whom will be up the decision whether or not a person has the right to visit the sanctuary: to each devotee’s sincere heart feeling or to the leaders of an organization? Paramhansa Yogananda, Jesus Christ and all the great masters of all times, have always attracted thousends of people coming from different places, so the number of people willing to visit the shrine of Paramhansa Yogananda will keep increasing. So che al momento la sua tomba si trova nel cimitero di Forest Lawn, a Glendale, ma che la Self-Realization Fellowship vorrebbe trasferirla a Mt. Washington. Questo progetto mi sembra azzardato, perchè non sembra tener conto dell’importanza che un santuario dedicato a Yogananda venga costruito in un luogo facilmente accessibile alle migliaia di devoti che desiderano visitarlo. Come futura visitatrice di questo santuario mi sembra più ragionevole la proposta fatta da altri devoti di Yogananda, non appartenenti alla SRF, di costruire un santuario in un luogo dove non si rendano necessari limiti all’accesso per problemi di traffico e di rispetto delle esigenze del vicinato. Ho sentito dire che la strada che porta a Mt. Washington è decisamente stretta. Quale visitatore vorrebbe trovarsi, in un probabile futuro, in mezzo a una folla di gente, in attesa di un piccolo furgone che trasporterà forse solo 10 persone per volta? o, in uno scenario ancora peggiore, chi vorrebbe correre il rischio di arrivare al santuario del suo maestro, e non poter entrare perchè era necessario prenotare la visita anticipatamente a causa di problemi organizzativi? La visita ad un santuario dovrebbe essere una gioia, non un Calvario! L’ultimo fatto che vorrei infine sottoporre alla sua attenzione, è poi il rischio che corre un devoto di Yogananda, non appartenenete alla SRF, di vedersi chiudere la porta in faccia solo perchè ha imparato ad amare Yogananda grazie a un canale diverso dalla SRF. In un prossimo futuro, a chi spetterà la decisione di avere il diritto o meno di visitare il santuario? Alla sincerità del cuore di ogni singolo devoto o ai capi di un’organizzazione? Paramhansa Yogananda, Gesù Cristo e i grandi maestri di tutti i tempi hanno sempre attratto a sè migliaia di persone provenienti da ogni luogo, così il numero di devoti desiderosi di visitare il santuario dedicato a Yogananda sarà sempre più numeroso. Sta a lei contribuire, prendendo la decisione più saggia, al bene del maggior numero di persone possibile. La sua responsabilità , in questa occasione, rappresenta una grande sfida ma anche una grande opportunità per rendere un servizio alla collettività.
